Sam Devlin bids his way to victory to raise $24,000 for Tongan Tsunami Appeal

February might be the shortest month of the year but we sure packed a lot in! Not least of all, HPC director, Sam Devlin, bid his way to victory and secured a position in the Vintage Reds Team to raise funds for the Tongan Tsunami Appeal.

In solidarity with the Tongan people following the catastrophic eruption of the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’api underwater volcano earlier this year, the Queensland Reds partnered with UNICEF Australia’s Tongan Recovery Appeal for February’s Vintage Reds XV Tongan Invitational XV match at Suncorp Stadium.

When Triple M’s Marty and Margaux auctioned off a place in the Reds side to support tsunami-ravaged Tonga, Sam got in on the action bidding $12,000 to secure his spot on the team, with all monies raised going to the appeal.

Suggesting a gentleman’s agreement with his last bidding opponent, Sam was able to double that amount and see the auction raise $24,000 for the appeal.

A former halfback, Sam dusted off his boots and joined the likes of Coach Toutai Kefu, James Horwill, Scott Higginbotham, Wendall Sailor and Lote Tuqiri.

“I won’t say I wasn’t a bit nervous before the game but our hearts went out to the people affected and It was a real thrill to get out there and support the appeal alongside some greats of the game,” said Sam.

The game was one to watch, with more than 4,000 fans rallying to watch the Tongan Invitational Team ultimately take the win.

Harcourts is beaming with pride to call Sam one of its own, with final funds raised from the match amounting to $122,771. Efforts are still underway, so if you’re interested in donating, click here.

Great job Sam, and to all those involved!
